Add A Venue On Foursquare

If you have a retail store, you should create a venue for people to check into sites like Foursquare and GoWalla. It's an easy way to create buzz and increase visibility of your company. Even if you only have a mobile store, or a booth at a local farmer's market, you can still add your location on Foursquare.

You can create a venue by going to foursquare.com, signing into your account, and then searching for the venue you want to create in the search box at the top right of the page. If your venue does not already exist on foursquare, you can create a new venue by scrolling to the bottom of the search results (bottom of page) and clicking "Add a new venue to foursquare."

Once you click the link you can put in the information, including address, of your store. From there, you can add special deals and offers to entice more people to check in and visit your location.

It's also easy to add a new venue on your mobile phone with the Foursquare app. Just go to the check-in tab, scroll to the bottom, and click "Add a new venue to foursquare." If you don't see that option, you may have to hit your menu button and it should provide the option to add a place.

New "People Talking About This" Metric on Facebook

A new statistic for Facebook pages may serve as a valuable measuring stick to see how engaging your brand or company's page is. The new "people talking about this" metric on Facebook will take into account when people:
  • like a page
  • answer a question on a page
  • like, comment, or share a page’s status update, photo or video
  • tag the page in a photo
  • mention the page in a post
  • RSVP to an event hosted by the page
  • check in to that place
This information will be available only to the page's administrator. For more information on this metric read this post from www.allfacebook.com, or this article from Mashable.

More Adults are Getting Into the Social Media Game

Social Media has always been dominated by younger folks, but according to a recent study by the Pew Research Center more and more adults are using social media. Here are some stats from the Wall Street Journal article that outlines the findings from the study:

  • 65% of all U.S. adults now use social-networking sites, up from 61% a year ago and just 5% in 2005
  • 33% of adults ages 65 and older say they now use social-networking sites, compared with 26% who said this a year ago
  • Younger people ages 18-29 account for 83% of all social media users
While younger people are still overwhelmingly in the majority for social media usage, adult usage is steadily on the rise. In the past social media was only appropriate for young and hip companies to find their younger market, other companies with older audiences should consider moving into the social media arena to get in touch with their consumers.

Funny Social Media Video

This video was created by Erik Qualman, the author of Socialnomics. It provides a comical view of the importance of social media for a business. It pokes fun at CEOs and CMOs who don't have a clue about how to use social media or its importance. If you know anyone who is a social media intern, pass this along to them.
